Excursions

Ouddorp is an ideal starting point for all kinds of excursions. Whether you want to go to an amusement park or a museum, there is so much to experience that one vacation is not enough. Many regular visitors, who have been associated with the small paradise of Ouddorp for years, still discover new attractions every time. And all that a stone's throw (or two) away. Below is a selection.

What you should definitely not skip is the viewing of the Delta Works. Dams and storm surge barriers built in the decades after the flood disaster of 1953 is a fine example of high-tech engineering in the fight against water. With these phenomenal structures that have never been found anywhere else in the world, the Netherlands has developed breakthrough techniques that are seen as a milestone for flood protection. The word is enormously appropriate here. And as a pleasant side effect of these Delta Works, the islands of South Holland and Zeeland are therefore interconnected with each other and with the mainland. www.deltawerken.com

At the overwhelming Oosterscheldekering, completed in 1986 (25 kilometers away), it is possible to climb a pillar and view it from the inside. You should certainly not miss the impressive film about the Delta Works, informing you about the total Delta Plan and its construction. The images speak for themselves.

MaaslantkeringThe two doors of the "Maeslantkering" (70km), which closes off the Nieuwe Waterweg for Rotterdam since 1997, is the final piece of the Delta Works to protect the Netherlands against flooding. This technical masterpiece is also a feat and certainly worth a visit. The two doors are almost as wide as the Eiffel Tower is high and four times as heavy. www.keringhuis.nl

Did you know that wine is grown in the south of the Netherlands? Vineyard "de Kleine Schorre" in Dreischoor (30km) on the neighboring island of Schouwen-Duiveland offers an interesting tour and surprises you with their delicious white wine. www.dekleineschorre.nl

In the land of mills these days more than 1000 can be found, most of which are still in operation. Nowhere else in the world can you find so many mills in one place as in Kinderdijk (68 km). The 19 mills (1740), classified as world heritage sites, stand like tin soldiers along a tributary of the Lek. Their task is to keep the polder lying below sea level dry. These mills are still used today. One of the mills, still in its original state, can be viewed (April - September). The road along the mills is perfect for a walking or cycling trip. You can also be brought to this place by boat. www.kinderdijk.com

Known all over the world is the flower park "De Keukenhof" in Lisse (110 km), the largest flower bulb garden in the world with 4.5 million tulips in more than 100 varieties, many other flowers and shrubs and 15 km of hiking trails. The beautiful orchid greenhouse will stun your senses. See for yourself. The Keukenhof is open in the spring (March - May). www.keukenhof.nl
