- Activities and Disruptions on the Island in 2023
In 2023, roadworks will take place on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, particularly on the eastern side, which may limit accessibility. If you are planning to travel to Ouddorp, it is important to take this into account when planning your journey.
What's happening?
In 2023, the movable part, known as the deck, of the Haringvliet Bridge will undergo renovation by Rijkswaterstaat. This bridge was opened in 1964, and the moving components as well as the control, operation, and monitoring systems are due for replacement. Additionally, Rijkswaterstaat will also renovate the Heinenoord Tunnel during 2023 and 2024. This tunnel dates back to 1969 and requires major maintenance. The province of South Holland will also install a guardrail between the lanes on the N59, making the road safer. Due to the combination of works at the Heinenoord Tunnel, there will be a period of inconvenience for N59 users.
Closures and additional travel time
Road users should take into account extra travel time, on top of the normal travel time, which can increase to over an hour during peak hours.
Haringvliet Bridge closure
From Friday evening, June 9, to Friday, August 4, the Haringvliet Bridge will be closed to all traffic. The movable part of the bridge will be replaced during this period.
Heinenoord Tunnel closures
- From Friday, June 2, 10:00 M, to Monday, June 5, 5:00 AM, heading towards Bergen op Zoom.
- On Thursday, June 8, from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM, heading towards Rotterdam.
- On Friday, June 9, from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM, heading towards Bergen op Zoom.
- From Saturday, August 5, 1:00 AM, to Monday, August 7, 1:00 AM, heading towards Bergen op Zoom.
- From Monday, August 7, 1:00 AM, to Friday, September 1, 5:00 AM, in both directions.
N59 closure
From Monday, August 7, to Friday, September 1, the N59 between Hellegatsplein interchange and Den Bommel junction (Schaapsweg) will also be closed.
Haringvliet recreational boating closures
From January 1 until the fall of 2023, no passage will be possible for vessels taller than 13 meters on the Haringvliet Bridge. The Haringvliet Bridge will not be operated during this period. Vessels taller than 13 meters must take a detour. Vessels with a height less than 13 meters can pass under the fixed part of the bridge. Maritime traffic can detour via the North Sea or through the Spui, Oude Maas, and Dordtsche Kil, but should expect significantly longer sailing times.
Tips to minimize inconvenience and avoid traffic jams
Rijkswaterstaat is taking measures to minimize inconvenience as much as possible. This includes diversions, adjustments to the road network, optimizing traffic lights for better traffic flow, and initiatives to promote cycling and the use of public transport.
You can also take steps yourself to minimize inconvenience on your route and avoid traffic jams:
- Prepare well before your journey.
- Know when there are closures and inform yourself about the diversions.
- Plan your travel to your (holiday) destination outside of peak hours.
- Check the traffic situation before you depart using existing apps, traffic information from Rijkswaterstaat, or from A naar Beter.
Once you arrive at your destination in Ouddorp, you can also consider the following tips:
- Rent a bicycle or e-bike for short distances.
- Make use of public transportation.
- Avoid traveling during peak hours.
- Avoid the diversion routes if possible.
By following these recommendations, you can contribute to minimizing inconvenience and avoiding traffic jams during the roadworks on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in 2023. Keep in mind the mentioned dates and closures to ensure a smooth journey.
